Six Strategies for Ensuring Safety as a Real Estate Agent

Every September, the real estate industry takes a moment to emphasize an often-overlooked topic: safety. The National Association of REALTORS® designates this month as REALTOR® Safety Month, highlighting the importance of safety in every client interaction and open house. Here are six effective strategies to help you stay safe in your role as a real estate agent.

1. Maintain Open Communication

Keeping lines of communication open is a simple yet vital safety measure. Whenever you're meeting clients or showing properties, inform someone—whether it's a colleague, family member, or friend—about your plans. You can share your schedule through tools like Google Calendar or send your GPS location to a trusted person.

2. Control Your Schedule

Establish a schedule that reflects your comfort level in meeting clients or hosting open houses. If you prefer not to work after dark, communicate this clearly in your marketing materials and stick to your set hours. If late meetings are unavoidable, inform your colleagues and ensure all lights are on during nighttime showings to enhance visibility and safety.

3. Address Open House Safety Concerns

Open houses require careful planning, especially regarding safety. Create a sign-in sheet for visitors to collect their names, addresses, and phone numbers. Monitor who enters and exits the property closely, and always check each room before locking up at the end of the day. Have a safety plan in place in case of emergencies.

4. Prioritize Vehicle Safety

Given that real estate agents spend considerable time in their cars, it's essential to maintain your vehicle properly. Schedule regular maintenance, including oil changes and brake checks, to prevent breakdowns. Keep your gas tank at least half full to ensure you’re never caught off guard.

5. Be Prepared for the Unexpected

While we hope to avoid dangerous situations, being prepared can help you feel more secure. Consider carrying personal safety items like pepper spray (be aware of local regulations) and taking self-defense classes. Park in well-lit areas and familiarize yourself with the neighborhood to enhance safety.

6. Ensure Trustworthy Meetings

In a digital age rife with scams, establishing trust is crucial. Request identification from new clients to verify their identity, and conduct initial meetings in public spaces or at your office. Once you've assessed their intentions and feel comfortable, you can proceed to private showings.

Your safety is paramount as you navigate the world of real estate. By implementing these strategies, you can protect yourself while focusing on your success as an agent. Stay safe and thrive in your career!
